Delhi’s National Zoological Park has had its WAZA membership suspended due to concerns over the treatment of Shankar, a solitary African elephant gifted to India in 1996. WAZA requires the zoo to create a plan within six months to relocate Shankar or address welfare concerns. Failure to comply could lead to permanent membership termination. The zoo can appeal the decision within 60 days.
