A recent study by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras highlights the increasing water demand in the Chennai basin area. The study predicts that the annual water supply demand will reach 2,445 million cubic metres by 2050. The researchers emphasize the need to prepare for both normal and deficit rainfall scenarios, as rains are unpredictable. They suggest groundwater recharge and the use of treated wastewater as key solutions to prevent water scarcity. Inexpensive solutions such as rainwater harvesting, increasing buffer areas around waterbodies, and decentralized water supply are also recommended.
